FARMING OPERATIONS

Tucked near the Gariep Dam in the tiny town of Bethulie, we’ve made our home and our farm. Most people haven’t heard of Bethulie (we don’t blame you—you might need a map!), but once you see it, you’ll understand why we love calling it home. Since 1949, when Oupa Henning Johannes Joubert first dreamed of this farm, our family has poured heart and hands into every field and paddock. Today, we’re still at it, running a thriving sheep and cattle farm, producing top-quality agricultural products while caring for the land, our animals, and the people lucky enough to call this place home.

Pure Merino Sheep Farming

We take immense pride in our pure Merino sheep, celebrated around the world for their high-quality wool. Merino wool is prized for its fineness, softness, and exceptional durability, making it a favorite item for textile manufacturers globally. Our sheep are raised in a nurturing environment, receiving optimal care, nutrition, and attention to ensure their well-being. This approach not only produces superior wool but also enhances the overall quality of our livestock.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Driefontein. We believe farming should work hand in hand with nature, not against it. That’s why we focus on eco-friendly methods that preserve our soil, conserve water, and encourage biodiversity. Through rotational grazing, cover cropping, and the use of organic soil amendments, we’re able to keep our pastures healthy and resilient—ensuring that the land we farm today will continue to thrive for generations to come.

Farming with Afrigus Cattle

On our farm, cattle play just as big a role as sheep, and we’re especially proud of our Afrigus herd. The Afrigus is a true South African story—born from the strength of the indigenous Afrikaner and the quality of the Angus. For us, it’s the perfect fit: a breed that combines tender, well-marbled beef with the toughness needed to thrive in our dry, sometimes unforgiving conditions.

What makes the Afrigus so special to us is how naturally it works with the land. These cattle are hardy, resistant to ticks and disease, and raise their calves with strong mothering instincts. At the same time, they deliver excellent growth and meat quality that farmers and consumers can trust. For Driefontein, the Afrigus is more than just a breed—it’s a symbol of farming smart, farming sustainably, and farming in a way that’s true to South Africa’s environment.

Driefontein’s farming operations extend their impact beyond the farm. By creating job opportunities for local residents and contributing to the regional economy, we aim to foster a culture of growth and prosperity. Our commitment to community development reflects our belief that a strong agricultural foundation supports not only our family legacy but the broader South African community as well.
